Bryte/Broderick Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative

Our mission is to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities

To continue our ministry of building decent, affordable homes for those in need Habitat for Humanity Yolo County will be concentrating on a three year neighborhood revitalization program in the Bryte/ Broderick neighborhoods of West Sacramento; involving residents, civic leaders, activists and professionals in improving the social, economic and environmental qualities of these neighborhoods. Working specifically in partnership with the Bryte/Broderick Community Action Network, Habitat will initiate a home repair program for low-income owner-occupied homes called A Brush With Kindness and seek in-fill lots to construct new homes and purchase homes for rehabilitation for new families within the Bryte/Broderick neighborhoods. This will be a major undertaking for our organization; mobilizing to deliver unprecedented levels of support to these communities seeking to withstand and survive the current economic downturn.

A Brush With Kindness

A Brush With Kindness is Habitat’s house-preservation initiative that focuses on minor repairs, wheelchair ramps, painting, weatherization and landscaping. This is a nationwide program serving low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain their homes.
Our weatherization program is designed to help homeowners improve their homes by reducing financial burdens and living more comfortably. Our weatherization program includes caulking/foaming of cracks and gaps and the replacement of inefficient windows with new energy efficient windows. As our objective is to increase the energy efficiency of the home, Habitat also installs compact fluorescent lights.

Our in-fill and rehabilitation projects help take vacant land and homes within a community and transform them into decent, affordable housing. These homes are sold to selected families at-cost. Our homes are less expensive than traditional builder homes due to the fact that the homes are built or renovated by volunteer labor. It is through homeownership that our families can break the cycle of poverty and build wealth and provide for a safe environment for their children to grow, to dream, and to achieve.

Our families apply for homeownership and repair work and must meet 3 criteria: need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with HFHYC and provide sweat equity to help build or repair their own home. In return, Habitat provides zero interest financing.

In-Fill and Rehabilitation of Homes

Bryte/Broderick residents of West Sacramento have identified priorities for their communities through their community strategic plan. The Bryte/Broderick Community Action Network (BBCAN) was created out of this strategic planning process and is responsible for working with the City of West Sacramento and other community organizations to implement this plan. One goal identified by Bryte/Broderick residents is to create clean and beautiful neighborhoods. Objectives identified to meet this goal are: well groomed yards, drought tolerant landscapes promoted and encouraged, green materials for home façade improvements, and homes getting face-lifts. This is why both the City of West Sacramento and BBCAN are excited about Habitat’s neighborhood revitalization initiative for Bryte/Broderick.

The goal with all these initiatives is to reinvest in these communities for the betterment of residents and our Habitat homeowners alike.
