Legacy gifts can be made in a variety of ways and ensure that the mission of Habitat for Humanity Yolo County is supported beyond the donor’s lifetime. There are several ways that individuals can include HFHYC in their estate plans, including:
Bequest. The easiest way to leave a legacy is to name Habitat for Humanity Yolo County as a beneficiary through your will or living trust. The following is suggested wording to use to make a bequest to Habitat for Humanity Yolo County:
"I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Habitat for Humanity Yolo County, California the sum of $__________(or ____% of the residue of my estate--or other real or personal property appropriately described) to be used by the Habitat for Humanity Yolo County as it shall deem advisable to best promote the organization's goals and mission."
You can also designate a specific program or purpose in the language of the will.
Retirement plans. A donor may accumulate retirement funds beyond their needs or those of their loved ones. A donor can name Habitat for Humanity Yolo County as a primary beneficiary of their pension, IRA, Keogh, profit sharing (or defined contribution) plan, 403(b) or 401 (k) or other retirement accounts.
Charitable remainder trust. By transferring assets including cash, real estate or securities into an irrevocable charitable trust a donor or other beneficiaries can receive income for a term of years or for life. Upon the donor’s or the beneficiaries’ death the remainder in the trust is distributed to HFHYC.
Charitable lead trust. With a charitable lead trust, a donor designates that income from the trust is distributed to HFHYC for a period of time after which the assets placed in the trust are transferred back to the donor or the donor’s heirs.
Retained life estate. A donor can transfer a personal residence or farm to Habitat Yolo and retain the right for himself or herself and a spouse to live there for life.
